Half Empty- Signs of Diabetes

Posted by pinepienaarinfo on 15th, 2011

Half Empty- Signs of Diabetes

Half empty 422 x 274

A Half Empty stomach is one of the best Signs to keep Diabetes and Blood Sugar levels in check.

When-ever you feel that stuffy (full) feeling after feeding, you can check your Glucose levels in 2hours time and it will be way up. It doesn’t matter what you eat, everything eventually turns into blood sugar.

Important checks to consider before you eat or even tasting any food.

  • Eat with your brains, Decide before hand what variety (combination) of foods you are going to consume. Do not trust your gut or appetite to make these important decision for you.
  • Measure the food quantities with  food scale; 100g x Meat (protein), 100g x Vegetables (Carbohydrates) x 2 (Variances ),  80g x Starch (potato or rice)
  • Once you have finished eating your food slowly – move away from the feeding area quickly -  to avoid further temptation.

Always check Blood Sugar Levels when you get the uncontrollable urge to feed.

GLOBAL TSUNAMI OF DIABETES

Pick n Pay - Walk of temptation

GLOBAL TSUNAMI OF DIABETES

One in 10 adults worldwide is obese and it is common knowledge that obesity raises the risk of Type 2 Diabetes.

According to a study published in the Lancet Journal – Majid Ezzati the study head of the Imperial College and Harvard University said: “Overweight and obesity, high blood pressure and high cholesterol are no longer Western problems or problems of wealthy nations,” It has spread to the poorer nations also.

On average the blood cholesterol fell in Australia New Zealand and North America but has increased in South/East Asia and the Pacific region.

Obesity-related diseases accounts for billions of dollars to be spent treating it every year (medical devices and drugs). In the U.S it is nearly 10% of the healthcare budget and Europe is not far behind on their spending.

One of the reasons for the rise in the “Global Tsunami of Diabetes” is shroud marketers and supermarket owner – Impulse buying has always been a major strategy for sales at check out points (cashiers)

In South Africa the Major Supermarket Groups like Clicks, Pick n Pay, Spar and Woolworths has now taken this strategy a little too far. They have created these “Walks of Temptation” which is narrow maize’s or corridors in front of their check out point. They force you to walk up and down these sweet smelling “Walks of Temptation”.

Clicks - walk of Temptation

Supermarket Groups create the image they have the community best interest at heart but creating these “Walks of Temptations” demonstrates they don’t care about the little people or the One with Type 2 Diabetes who has a eating problem.

Maybe be we should get these devious marketer to pay compensation to the Diabetic Funds on a yearly basis or maybe I should stop sneaking up and down in the “Walks of Temptations”and get my BG’s checked.

The Early signs of thirst (dehydration) and hunger are the same.

Hypoglycemia – Low blood sugar levels

Symptoms are hunger and shakiness

It has happened to me that I had to deal with a stressful situation and the traffic home was even worse. Arriving at home it felled like I could eat a horse for starter but just to fill the time before my horse are cooked I test – and it turns out that my Blood Sugar Level were sky high. GESTATIONAL DIABETES – Diabetics Signs Symptoms

Posted by pinepienaarinfo on 25th, 2011

Rocher monitor

GESTATIONAL DIABETES

Gestational Diabetes begins during pregnancy period and if not controlled correctly can have serious effects on the mother and her fetus.

High gestational diabetes levels can lead to;-

  • Higher risk of miscarriages
  • More difficult births
  • Heavier Newborns

The goal for every mother to be is to keep their Blood Sugar levels (glucose level) as close to normal (5.5mmol/l) as possible.

Using portable Blood Sugar Meters for this purpose it ideal because they are small and easy to carry with you, but a recent studies have found that these meter are not as accurate as previously thought.

Doctor Nimalie Perera in Sydney Australia has compared over a hundred woman’s sugar readings (done of portable meters) to the results from the lab test result at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

She has found that these portable meter are inaccurate on average between 6% and 16%

For the average hard core Diabetic these inaccuracy will not really have an effect on but for a mother to be and her growing baby these difference can have serious concern quinces.

Some of the meter that was used during the test period was

  • Stat-Strip – off by 6%
  • OptiumXceed – off by 16%

(Results was published in Diabetic Care)

Adrienne Turner a spokesmen for Abbott Diabetes Care, manufacture of OptiumXceed Says;

  • “All of Abbott’s blood glucose monitoring systems meet the current international standard for blood glucose meter accuracy,”
  • “The accuracy of its medical products is one of Abbott’s main priorities and we will continue to meet current and future regulatory and industry standards for blood glucose meter accuracy.”

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approves all blood monitoring meter in the United States and their requirement for accuracy is 20%

Australia has the same criteria as in the United States of 20%

It seems we are in a loop again where the manufactures won’t improve their own products – if the authorities don’t say so and the authorities which are funded by some of these major companies will not improve on minimum accuracy standard

Well I’m off to fool myself with some inaccurate testing

Fat-loss with Bariatric Procedures – Diabetic Signs Symptoms..

Been overweight leads to all kinds’ illnesses like Type 2 diabetes and early death – not so much the fat as it is the unhealthy life style and eating habits that goes with been overweight. Fat-loss with Bariatric Procedures has become very popular and is an easy way to quickly rectify this unhealthy condition.

Bariatric Procedures

The Bariatric Procedures is a quick convenient way or fat-loss and to rectify a life threading situation.

The stomach size gets reduced with the following methods

1.   Gastric Band

2.   Gastric Bypass

Basically a portion of the stomach gets removed or re-route the intestines to a smaller stomach pouch

A team of Researchers from the Imperial College in London found of the 6953 Bariatric procedures done in England last year was the most.

  • 238 procedures in 2000 to
  • 2543 procedures in 2009

Another of their findings was that 12 to 30 months after the Gastric Banding was done;

  • the patients that had to go back to the hospital was lesser
  • And for shorter time periods compare to the patients that had the Gastric Bypass Operation.
  • Also the post surgery death rates were lower than gastric bypass operations.

Bariatric surgery is recommended by The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence for people who have a;

  • BMI of 35
  • Has other conditions that can be improve by weight loss
  • Has “morbid obesity”

The last point could open it up to people that purely just want the procedures done for cosmetic purposes and has got the will power to do it the healthy way by been more active and eating in a controlled way.

Most of the time overweight people also has physiology issues which doesn’t get resolved by Bariatric operations and is still there after the operation, which means they will end up fat and depressed again.

According to Gordon Founder and Director of the Center for Mind Body Medicine in Washing to DC “You have to become aware of what and how you eat, through mindfulness. Very often, if you are anxious, you are going to eat more.”

Edward Abramson, PhD, an emeritus professor of psychology at California State University at Chico says; “When you are depressed, it is much harder to get out of bed, much less pay attention to what you are eating,”

He recommends to get moving (walking) first and then start working on your eating disorder.

Well I off to the kitchen for nuts and carrots

Diabetes is very destructive

Posted by pinepienaarinfo on 9th, 2010

ist1_2883751-cappuccino-cup-with-drawing-on-scum

I would like to share these words of wisdom from tomross

“Diabetes is very destructive to your cardiovascular health, and diabetes medications do little or nothing about this problem.  If you want to prevent the most dangerous diabetic “complication” of them all (coronary heart disease), you need to exercise.

Unfortunately, you won’t see any immediate sign of the good that exercise is doing in this regard, so for a long time you may have a hard time believing that you’re getting anything out of it.

You just have to keep on doing what you know to be the right thing to do”.

These words helps me to get moving early in the mornings when the sun is not up yet!

Embrace your healthy living.

Hope for Parents with Diabetes Children

Hope for Parents with Diabetes Children

Soon parents will be able to sleep a little easier knowing that their child will not  go into a coma if their glucose levels has dropped too low (hypoglycemia) during their sleep and they did not know about it.

A team of researchers at the University of California has developed an implant sensor (1.5 inches in diameter, and 5/8 inch thick) that measures blood sugar continuously, and then transmit this data up to 12 feet. Making it further possible to use a cell phone and get the data while you at work and the child are in school.

Professor (bio-engineer) David Gough who led the study said in a statement

  • “We hope to begin the first human trial in a few months,”
  • “You can run the device for a year or more with it constantly working, and recording glucose quite satisfactorily”

This development is one step closer to an “artificial pancreas”!

Signs of Diabetes-Just Diagnosed with Diabetes

Posted by pinepienaarinfo on 23rd, 2010

surprise smiley

New to Diabetes

If you just been diagnose with Type two diabetes, Welcome! to one of the fastest growing communities in the world.

You have  most properly been asking yourself “Why Me”, “How”, “What now” and you have now turned to the Internet to find  a “cure for diabetes“.

Don’t worry these overwhelming emotions and the feeling that you have lost control of your life, is normal. (Most diabetics have those feelings some time or another) As you increase your diabetic knowledge, these emotions will fade away.

Some diabetics even go into denial. “If I ignore it, it will go away”.

Once all those personal feeling has been dealt with,  it is time to get down to the business of managing your diabetes and getting to know the Diabetes Signs Symptoms.

The only “cure for diabetes” is by efficiently manage your blood sugar levels, with diet, physical activities and medication.

Firstly you need to improve your own Diabetes Knowledge

o   You need to know that your body is no longer controlling your blood sugar levels and you have to do it yourself manually – with a diabetic diet and implementing some life style changes.

o   You also need to know if your body is still making insulin and if it is just not been absorb by your body(insulin reflectors) or if  your body is just not making sufficient insulin.

o   You also need to know that there is no universal diabetes diet plan; there are however universal foods you may eat and not eat.

Secondly just forget about you old unhealthy life style and embrace your new healthy diabetes life. Diabetes is not a death sentence, you just have to be aware of what you feed on and do each moment.

Been diagnosed with diabetes you are now “forced” to do what High Achiever has been doing all along. Controlling their diets, staying active and fit, getting plenty sleep – are the basic cornerstones of all professional Sportsmen and Supermodel.

Steps to follow

1.  Start a food journal (I like to think of it as a Food Budget  - like a financial budget) A diabetic only have certain amount of Protein, Carbohydrates and sugars (fruit) to enjoy daily. By keeping records you can still enjoy most of your favorite foods.
Portfolio & Diabetes Organizer
MEDport Portfolio & Diabetes Organizer

a.  Record date/time/blood sugar level. You might have a morning tea with a biscuit while doing physical work but having that same tea and biscuit in the afternoon while doing less physical work will give a negative effect.

b.   Record Food and drink down to the finest detail. Click here for blood sugar levels

c.   Also record how your physical mood – you need to know what different food/drinks are doing to your energy levels and how it affects your mental state (moods) (depression is common when blood sugar levels are not controlled). These entries will quickly help you to establish pattens and similarities for foods to avoid.

2.  In the beginning it is important to do regular testing. (Try and get your own blood glucose meter asp.) Record your blood sugar levels before you eat and then 2 hours after.  It will give you an indication which foods are spiking your blood sugar more than others.

accu meterMeter Kit

  • Eat regular small meals every 2 to 3 hours, even if you are not hungry. Feeding regularly will avoid blood glucose levels dipping(making you feel exhausted and moody) and by keeping stabilized blood sugar levels  those terrible cravings will also be minimized.

3.   Cut all carbohydrates like bread, pastries and pastas form your diet. You will get sufficient carbs from your vegetable intake. Once you have your BG (blood glucose levels) under control and stable. Your can eat the above again but in controlled portions. All carbohydrates will turn to sugar in your body – eventually.

Salad 494x351

4.  Vegetables are a must for a healthy diet. Potatoes and other starchy veggies should be cut form diet, Carrots, tomatoes, salads and broccoli are health choices. The green vegetables are better for a diabetic.

5.  Protein is the magic stuff. By increasing your protein intake i.e. Fish, white chicken meat your will decrease your blood sugar quicker and keep it more stable.

6.  Exercise;  Exercise and dieting is the only possibility you have to reversing diabetes. The secret here  is consistency, the more regular you are the quicker you are going to see positive result in your blood sugar levels. Walking and swimming are always a good place to start the journey to fitness

Most Type 2 diabetics always have an excuse for why they aren’t in a fitness program. You know eider you are working all the time and you only have time to eat your food on the run.  Or you have a serious medical condition and you could only send time on the coach in front of the television.

All I can say, “Get Moving” It does not matter if you can only walk to the fridge and back “just do it”. It is a start and do it as often as you can.” Wheel chair are allowed to move away from bread-bins and TV’s.

7.   Water; Another dirty word for most diabetics. Most people mistake dehydration for hunger pains.  Flavoring the water in the beginning will help you to get it down. (NO! Not with alcohol) – but a slice of lemon/orange or cucumber  slice, makes for a nice refreshing drink. You need to flush your liver and kidneys especially in the early stages. Eight glasses or 2 liter of water is the minimum requirement, don’t drink it in one go, rather sipped it threw out the day.

8.  Snacking. Healthy snack are nuts and “maybe popcorn” with flavoring. Potato chips and puff in fact all man made snack are now off  the snacking menu.

In the beginning it is hard to just stop eating all your favorite junk foods. Take away outlets like KFC and MacDonald’s should be avoided at all cost. Once your food-budget is balancing, you can indulge in some of you favorites again.

Very important! Please don’t walk around and whine to everyone “I have diabetes feel sorry for me”. Rather join a forum like http://www.dlife.com/diabetes-forum/ or http://www.diabeticrockstar.com/where everybody knows what kind of emotions you have to deal with and they do understand your feelings.

Only you can manage your own diabetes, don’t even think about pushing the responsibility/blame over to your mother, wife or partner.

Enjoy reading food labels and packaging.

Lowering your Blood Sugar

Posted by pinepienaarinfo on 9th, 2010

“If your doctor tries to discourage you from lowering your blood sugar, find a new doctor”.

An Accord study has been used to indicate that by lower your blood sugar that it could increase the risk of heart attacks.  Sulfonylureas, Actos and Avandia was some of the drugs used for the tests and they are known to increase heart problems.

This has resulted that some practitioners believe that lowering your A1c is dangerous.

But in fact using oral drugs may lead to others complications;-

  • Sufonylureas stimulate cell receptors on the pancreas and also on the heart.
  • TZD convert bone stem cells into fat cells (leading to osteoporosis)
  • Januvia and Onglyza inhibit DPP-4 used to fight different cancers elsewhere

Reducing carbohydrates intake is a much saver method of reducing blood sugar levels and keeping it low will provide long term health benefits.

Metformin and Insulin is still the best medication to take.

Weight loss – Little help from my friends!

Posted by pinepienaarinfo on 20th, 2009

Losing weight is Hard! Friends that share their trails and tips with you does make the situation more manageable. Having healthy, living, eating friends around has changed the “weightless situation” to a “way of life” and it is great getting up and improving your whole life balance small parts at a time! Following are gems that was shared by my Friends over at DiabetesDaily.

trinitarian3n1

  • Insulin is the primary fat storage hormone in the body.
  • It also turns off lipase–the enzyme that burns fat.
  • If you are injecting insulin or taking any of the “oral hypoglycemic” medications (sulfonylureas), you should work with your doctor to reduce doses as you cut back on your carbs or you’ll risk going low.
  • I have found that once I eliminated breads, pasta, chips, potatoes, and fruits that my cravings for these have disappeared
  • You may find that weight drops quickly initially as the glycogen stores with a significant amount of water weight attached to them are depleted
  • Fat-burning, however, takes time
  • but a pound per week is considered a good level of weight loss generally.
  • a higher protein, fat diet does wonders to keep one satisfied
  • hunger is not there like it was when eating higher carbs
  • sometimes appetite will kick in after reading food posts
  • a diet drink will usually do the trick

jeanne wagner

  • changing up the kinds of exercise will help spark weight loss
  • use a low carb diet and it has been very effective
  • One thing that you have to be careful with when you do intense exercise is that when you are finished, sometime you are starving and eat more calories than you burned off.
  • Even 30 minutes of exercise may only burn off 300 calories. If you eat 2 slices of bread or a bagel you’ve eaten that much.
  • To lose 1 pound you need to burn 3500 calories
  • That is a lot of exercise or you can try cutting 500 calories a day
  • add more protein and fat. I started eating things like bacon, eggs, low carb toast for breakfast. I stayed full for 4 hours
  • keep food journals with the food we eat, carb and calorie count and what our bg’s are 1 or 2 hours after.
  • BG’s should be below 140.
  • I make sure I have enough to eat to make it through the class. Sometimes I’ll make a strawberry whey smoothie.
  • I finish exercising I usually eat something small that has protein
  • By eliminating pasta, rice, bread, potatoes, etc I’ve been able to eat a lot of other foods instead
  • Things like oatmeal, toast, rice, potatoes, fruit and yogurt are all carbs
  • changed breakfast to bacon and eggs, had vegetables or boiled eggs for snacks and meat and vegetables for lunch and dinner you would see a big drop in weight
  • eat 50-75 carbs a day I probably eat 1600 calories a day and lose about 1/2 pound-1 pound a week
  • people think breakfast has to be cereal based. That is the worst thing for diabetics
  • As we age, we do need to be more careful with exercise
  • menopause has played havoc with my body
  • important to warm up correctly
  • drink lots of water
  • know the limits of your own body
  • Sometimes it’s better to do gentler types of exercise like walking or pilates or yoga
  • limit it to 1 or 2 times a week and don’t try to overload bar with heavy weights
  • cut back on heavy exercise and did milder things like walking
  • I have to listen to my body
  • warm up ahead of time
  • stretching after a workout
  • was in trouble when the 7 month pregnant woman lapped me twice
  • lost a lot of weight but it has taken 7 years to do it
  • The closer you get to your goal the harder it is
  • Sometimes just making small changes like swapping bread and using lettuce for sandwiches or swapping pasta out and adding another salad for dinner
  • I’m determined to be a fit and trim woman in her 60’s.
  • lose weight in 10-15 pounds segments and then plateau

EmmJay

  • I also prescribed to a low carb diet with moderate exercise
  • Also I eat pasta, but I eat it maybe once in a week in a very small portion to satisfy my desire
  • small changes sometimes have very big results
  • reducing my carbs to 75 grams or less per day I have managed to lose 59 pounds in 7 months
  • my BG levels are almost consistent
  • I look and feel 10000% better, my skin is much better
  • I really don’t have cravings for the carbs any longer
  • It takes time, but slow, small changes make the world of difference over the long haul

cjo20

  • Diet is much more important than exercise when it comes to losing weight
  • small snack can negate the effects of an hour of exercise
  • you should look at your total calorie consumption
  • Keeping a detailed food log may help
  • To lose weight, you will need to eat fewer calories in a day than the body burns.
  • the body doesn’t like using up it’s carefully stored reserves of fat, so it will try it’s best to get you to eat something to make up the energy deficit
  • most people seem to snack whenever they feel even slightly hungry – which is what causes weight to stay where it is ( or go up ).
  • It doesn’t have to be a huge drop in calories a day, even a small deficit will cause weight loss in the long run
  • dropping 200 calories a day is equivalent to losing about 0.5lb of fat a week
  • giving up just 1 chocolate bar a day, you can lose about 14kg/28lb/2 stone in a year

DWine

  • eat a snack of veggies when your tempted to go for the starchs
  • I love bread and pasta too, but it does not love me so the relationship has ended between us
  • shredded cabbage and saute it with onion and then scramble an egg into it.
  • if you need things to crunch, and who doesn’t, buy some raw nuts like almonds, pecans and cashews
  • 10 – 15 pecan halves, cashews, or almonds are low in carb but not in calories
  • I use a 1/8c container to measure a serving out.
These really help stem the cravings too

bsc

  • you have to approach this in a measured manner
  • If your body believes that you are starving, it will hold onto ever little bit of weigh
  • follow a “low carb” diet and drop your calories to “just below” what you need
  • Just below” does not mean a 2000 calorie deficit, it means perhaps 500 calories
  • start tracking exactly what you eat
  • lunch cannot be “whatever is served.”
  • healthier and better eating 4-6 small meals throughout the day
  • You food is your medicine and you must control
  • you need to log and track what you eat.
  • purchase 100% whey, avoid soy
  • select a mix that is low carb and contains something like 5g in a serving
  • Avoid the Grow formulas that have 100g of carbs
  • mix my protein mix with milk, it adds 12g of carbs
  • have a shake first thing in the morning, it helps disrupt my strong dawn phenomenon
  • usually work out in the gym after eating, so I don’t take a shake before working out
  • have a shake after the gym, it really helps recovery
  • Protein shakes are a great way to supplement protein and are fine for diabetics
  • If you follow diets like “protein power” these are really helpful. I don’t think age is a fact
  • as a diabetic protein at high levels can and will affect your blood sugar
  • protein over 25g in a meal is converted to blood sugar with a 1/3 efficiency
  • meal with 55g of protein would have the same effect on my blood sugar as eating 10g of carbs.
  • Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS). This can hit you particularly hard if you are weight training
  • DOMS is muscle soreness, pain and stiffness that sets in 24-48 hours after exercise
  • It affects everyone, diabetic and not, but there is a lot of variation
  • accustomed to movements, the DOMS goes away
  • if I lay off training for a week or two, I would suffer badly when I returned
  • It is mostly associated with new movements and what I term “overreaching

  • there will always be someone older than you who is fitter and stronger
  • competing with is yourself
  • You are successful if you achieve your goals,

1. becoming fitter

2. losing weight o

3. having better blood sugar control.

  • you metabolize fat when your body calls on energy and needs to reach down into your fat reserves
  • our bodies are accustomed to getting energy from blood sugar first then to draw on other sources like fat
  • if you have blood sugar available, you won’t tap into your fat reserves
  • metabolizing of fat is triggered by lowered insulin levels and increased glucagon levels
  • to drive fat loss, keep your blood sugar levels low and keep your insulin levels low
  • perform low level exercises like walking, you will achieve the best fat loss
  • walking around all day with high blood sugar and insulin on board is not going to help you with fat loss
  • If your blood sugar is high after exercising and does not come down, fasting is not going to be of any help in fat loss
