Diabetes and Alcohol  Fitness

Our social structures make it difficult for a person to be sociable and not to consume alcohol. At every work or sports gathering alcohol is always present in some form, if  not then it is in the food.

Even some churches advocate that you must consumed wine. (Sorry if I offended anyone) Speaking for myself, I was actually looking forward to that day I could drink wine in church – To be part of that whole ritual at a certain age is important.

It was only at a later stage that I discoverd that almost all the churches use wine juice with no alcohol in it for that purpose.

Clever drinkers advocate one drink a day is actually good for you (whisky sippers like me) or the oxidants in a glass of red wine can perform miracles.

Some diabetes types say alcohol actually lowers their blood sugar levels.

Other people also need alcohol to unwind after a stressful day at the office. University students that has to perform long hours of studying and exams, also turn to drinking at parties/social gatherings to distress.

Whether you are an athlete, diabetic or just trying to maintain a certain level of fitness, alcohol consumption best be avoided, apart from running the risk of getting involve in a legal matter. There is certain health factor to consider before drinking alcohol.

·        Alcohol gives rise to the release of insulin then glycogen metabolism increases. Losing any fat in this condition will be very hard.

·        Cortisol (stress hormone) levels rise when consuming alcohol.

Ø Protein synthesis decrease when cortisol levels are up. Muscle growth slows down because muscle cells need protein to maintain growth.

·        Alcohol extend the recovery (extreme soreness) time after a work-out, because it cause inflammation of the muscles.

Ø Less efficient and weaker muscles are caused by heat loss from heavy drinking.

Ø Drinking a lot will actually cause the muscle cells to die

·        The up take of vitamins and minerals becomes harder because alcohol slows down the process. Resulting in a vitamin deficiency.

·        Fat loss will not be effective with alcohol because it is not calorie free.

After a drinking session your throbbing headache or hangover the next day will tell you that you consumed too much alcohol.  What it will not tell you is the emotional damage that you have caused to loves ones and yourself.

Alcohol also messes with your blood sugar readings and it becomes harder to read the diabetic signs and symptoms.

If you are serious about your health and you want to perform at your peak in everyday tasks it is best stay clear of alcohol

I have just received this email for my friend Bob and I thought because it is relevant to this post that I want to share it.
    Pine,

I am not sure that I should do this, but I will keep this as positive as I can. I like your blog of 17 April 2010. After reading it completely, I made the assumption that you were talking mainly about excessive consumption of alcohol. When I view it from that perspective, the conclusions drawn make perfect sense and I agree with your points. (Correct me if I am wrong). By the way, I no longer drink alcohol and doing so would generally affect me by raising my blood sugar levels.

When I went back to the top and reread some of your comments, I had to doubt my conclusion because of the example of wine in the small containers at church. That is the one example that does not fit the rest of the post, but does make the post more personalized.

Your statement that “some diabetes types say alcohol actually lowers their blood sugar levels” is very much correct and when made in the way expressed by some of the following articles, it can actually cause hypoglycemia.

Alan Shanley is one person I respect and he does like wine – which I don’t – and his blog is worth reading at http://loraldiabetes.blogspot.com/2007/03/red-red-wine.html. He does urge moderation.

The American Diabetes Association at http://www.diabetes.org/food-and-fitness/food/what-can-i-eat/alcohol.html does make the point about what to consume for quantities of alcohol and makes excellent points against drinking plus talking to your doctor before drinking to be sure that the medications and alcohol combinations will not cause problems.

At the following link – http://diabetes.webmd.com/drinking-alcohol the people at WebMD is basically a repeat of some of the ADA advice.

The following article is also to the point http://www.faqs.org/faqs/diabetes/faq/part3/section-20.html and has a very good point when they state – Diabetics must remain sober enough to care for themselves (perform injections on schedule, etc).

So while I very much like your post, there are points that you left untouched and could have used to give your post the extra touch. Even by not covering some of the points made by Alan Shanley and the points in the other references (links) that I have given you, There were a couple of things I feel should have been considered.
    1. The possible conflict between alcohol and the medications the person is taking.
    2. The potential for alcohol masking the symptoms of hypoglycemia. This is dangerous from two perspectives. You may be misdiagnosed (as a drunk) and not receive the proper treatment for hypoglycemia which can cause death. Even if you wear a medic alert bracelet or necklace, you may not be taken seriously and still be given the incorrect treatment.
I respect your position and think alcohol and diabetes should not be mixed. Be prepared to have people disagree with your position, and say what some of the links cover that I provided. There are a lot of people that just do not want their alcohol taken away and are looking for any article to say that they can enjoy their alcohol – and then they ignore the need for moderation and checking with their doctor. I see this on the forums all the time.

The links (references) I mention above are not lengthy (except for Alan’s) and are an easy read. I selected them by using a search engine and your title of “Diabetes and Alcohol”.

I hope this is constructive and gives you further ideas. I am not requesting that you make changes to your post as can stand as it is.
    Bob
